nine inch nails concert 3/10/06: the mullins center has great accoustics for a rock and roll show. the seats are comfortable and the premises are kept clean.
nine inch nails exposes the ugliness beautifully in their show tonight at the mullins center at amherst.
halfway through the set, a curtain dropped showing a video montage of money being printed, forests being cut down and bombs exploding on the horizon reflected back toward the audience from the curtain. in sharp contrast a picture of george and laura bush ballroom dancing, which illicited a vocal response from the audience, was followed by a disturbing image of an american soldier pressing a gun into the temple of an 8 year old iraqi girl. this was fittingly followed by an emotional rendition of the hand that feeds highlighting the apparent truthfulness of the troubling lyrics : What if this whole crusade's a charade / And behind it all there's a price to be paid / For the blood on which we dine / Justified in the name of the holy and the divine / Just how deep do you believe / Will you bite the hand that feeds?
Reznor once again shows his ability to use that raw, industrial rage that he exemplifies to make you feel a deep guttural flow of love, hate, anger, rage, sadness, and everything in between. and of course the show was highlighted when the lights were cut and the ballad "hurt" was performed by trent along with every member of the audience, word for word. speaking of lighting, whoever has engineered the lighting for this show is fucking brilliant! he is on a level by himself in his trade. the finale of head like a hole was performed to a standing audience who didn't quite seem ready for the abrupt departure of the band that fittingly left us all unprepared to come down from the emotional upheaval they had inspired. without question this show was worth the extended wait!
