Quabbin Pizza and Seafood is an economical place to dine right in the center of Barre (pronounced "barry"), and the food is very good. When you're done and you walk out, you say "That was good!" Not in a gourmet kind of way, but tasty and filling.
Over the last couple of years, I've had their salads, pasta dishes, soups, subs, and pizza (the pizza is "OK/good" but I'm not crazy about Greek-style pizza so I'm not much of a reviewer on that). Their eggplant parmesan is excellent, and I'm a tough critic on that particular dish and try it everywhere. Portions are large; I usually take half of any dish home.
This is the kind of place where you walk up to the counter, order your meal, they call your name or bring your meal over, and you pay when you're done eating; or you can get takeout. You get your drinks from a big cooler, and they have Pepsi products, waters, etc. Expect plastic forks/knives, and paper plates and foil take-home containers. In other words, it's a great place after a hike or after the Saturday Farmer's Market (warm weather times of the year), where you won't feel out of place in sweats and boots or a tee shirt.
Everyone's very nice there, and the place is very clean with a more-than-decent rest room, accessible to the handicapped. The restaurant is not large, maybe 10 tables for 4-6 each. It has a tile floor, so with the wooden chairs scraping on the floor and a school group there recently, it got pretty noisy. (They really should consider putting something on the chair feet, like those little felt pads, because the chair noise can get really annoying whether it's busy there or not.) You can use your own wireless connection there just fine.
I haven't had any of the desserts so I can't write about them. There is fantastic ice cream (and not as expensive as further east) most of the year just a few doors down at the bakery.
While you're in Barre, check out Cook's Canyon (and falls) for hiking, the Great Rock Alpaca Farm, a few gift shops in town, the Saturday morning Farmer's Market during the spring-summer-fall, and the town common which just SAYS "This is New England". The holiday lights on the common are spectacular at that time of year. This is an overlooked place but shouldn't be, it's so pretty, and has some remarkable history.
Enjoy!
