Once upon a table is a quaint little restaurant with very good down home cooking. I had a salmon sandwich on an English muffin. My daughter and her girlfriend both took in the Pesto Gnocchi. I only wish there was one near me.
We went there after going to a Time share presentation. I would recommend this restaurant to anyone in the Stockbridge area.
We spotted this tidy and inviting bistro nestled in a pedestrian walkway just to the left of the world famous Red Lion Inn. We were searching for an informal sit-down lunch with a glass of wine and maybe desert before the last hour or so of driving we planned for that day.
Once Upon A Table was a perfect match. The 3-page menu and single sheet of daily specials all appeared tasty, and we selected homemade vegetable lentil soup with chicken. This clear-broth treat was slightly rustic, moderately spiced, and a very welcome opener.
My son began with smoked salmon with toast points, and while the dish was prepared with traditional garnishes of shallots and capers, the presentation was something extra. Many slices of the salmon had been rolled and arranged in a vertical center, corralled by onion hoops.
Entrees (pleasing portions of pasta and gnocchi) and deserts (traditional profiterols and a room-temperature cheese cake with blueberry compote) were nicely presented and made with careful attention. I found the wine list to be ample, offering about 20 choices selected to appeal to most tastes. My wine was a Spanish red which fit our food selections and afternoon timeframe.
Service was relaxed, but attentive and professional. Prices are very moderate and the food quality is excellent. This bistro is a converted sunporch opening to a courtyard of art shops and village businesses. There are perhaps 10 tables with a decor featuring simple painted walls and French posters.
Since we make trips between Boston and Albany a number of times a year, we are definitely glad to have this location on our preferred list.
