The Hollywood could be - might be - the best joint ever. It looks like a movie-set roadhouse saloon from 80 years ago- all stucco exterior and "old west" roof-line. Inside it's a saloon from 30 years ago - all knotty pine and redneck chic. It's sorta what you picture when you think of a country bar in the middle of nowhere and you want the "Good Ol' Blues Boys" to be ripping it up on stage and dodging beer bottles behind a chain link screen. Unfortunately, it feels like a dying establishment. The sign out front burned out long ago and the ravages of the Western MA winters are beating the exterior to shreds. The bar seems to be the only functioning area inside as the dancefloor and stage have long since been turned into storage for empties. You'll find a knot of friendly if grizzled blue-collar folks at the bar around quittin' time (5pm) and then the bartender and maybe one or two of their friends there at night. I've been watching this place over the last couple of years and can't quite figure out what the plan is (if there is one). From what I can tell the owner lives out back and seems to be around but the place is just slowly fading away. You can envision what this joint must have been (could be?) in it's heyday and it's sad to see these sorts of slices of americana die off so..stop in and buy a round (heck buy the good stuff) and maybe we'll all get through this recession together!
