Yeah, it's a blue-collar northshore divebar and we wouldn't have it any other way! Big high ceiling room; faux-wood horseshoe bar, both kinds of beer (Bud AND Bud Light), couple of pool tables. Unusual for giant picture windows looking out to Rogers St. and the docks on the other side presumably so fisherman can keep an eye on their boats and the weather. Crowd a mixture of regulars, off-duty fishermen and the odd out-of-towner. Friendly, helpful bartenders but look like they don't take no guff! Bar was featured character in book and movie "The Perfect Storm" and must get the occasional tourist (prob explains the lone Bass Ale tap on offer) that isn't too horrified by the exterior and the scurvy seadogs smoking out front. Little seems to be made of the Andrea Gail story (and prob best not to bring it up unless they bring it up to you) save for a dingy wall hanging of the boat and some framed pix. Note: the bar in the movie was a set but the events in the book and movie all happened in here. Reeking in local atmosphere (and other things!), The Crow's Nest is the real deal.
I must start by telling you that I did not stay in a room. My only intent was to experience the people, and the atmosphere in the bar. As far as the people........the best you will find anywhere! The atmosphere was everything that I was hoping for in a fishing community. I was looking for a down-to-earth place where the people would be as down to earth as they come, and I found it!
The evening started by me asking for a Busch Light beer (I am from Missouri), and the bar tender couldn't have laughed harder! I immediately felt like I was accepted. I settled on a Budweiser, and the evening began. My sister, and brother-in-law wanted some wine, and the bar tender seemed confused! Again, this is exactly what I expected. Not only was the wine issue confusing to the bar tender, but the wine was terrible! Again, exactly what I would expect, and what I hopped for.
My wife, and I wanted to buy a t-shirt, and hat for a souvenier of our being there. The bar tender showed us different colors of hats, etc. My wife wanted a maroon t-shirt, and a gentleman sitting next to her suggested a blue one because he said that the maroons one fadded too bad. We accepted his advice and bought a blue t-shirt, and a tan hat. We are both very proud of our purchase.
I had a very unique contact with a woman that has year's of experience with the bar. She said that she lived there on and off for a while, and had many stories to share. Although we didn't stay long enough to hear all of her stories....she did share one story with me that I will take to my grave. If you want to find out for yourself......my only advice for you is to go there for yourself, and see what you can find out.
I can promise you this...my first stop the next time I am in the Boston area will be to the Crow's Nest. I plan on hearing more stories. Maybe they will have a Busch Light for me upon my return!
Thinking of MA from MO.
Never had so much fun!!!: My husband and I spent our honeymoon in Rockport, but had to check out The Crow's Nest during our trip. We had the most fun there than anywhere else! The locals were SO friendly. I found it funny though everytime tourists came in, took one horrified look around and walked out. They obviously were expecting something more upscale, stuffy and glitzy. If you plan to visit The Crow's Nest because you're a fan of the film The Perfect Storm, actually pay attention. The bar is nothing more or less than portayed in the movie. We had a fabulous time and when we go back for our one year anniversay, we DEFINITELY plan to revisit!!!!!
