I'm a Header although I currently live somewhere else. I was recently at The Barnacle for lunch on Tuesday, drinks Wednesday night & lunch again on Thursday. Tuesday I had the swordfish with onion rings & three white Russians. The fish was good but it was dry. The onion rings were good & I had a sundae for dessert. I can't say that the food is the best I've ever had, but then again I come for the drinks & the camaraderie at the bar. Danny was the bartender serving that afternoon. He makes whities just the way I like them.
Wednesday I'd had a lot of dental work done that day & needed to blunt the pain. So I walked down to the Barnacle. Jimmy was behind the bar. We caught up with each other since I hadn't seen him in a few years & another 3 whities were inhaled.
Thursday I had the Halibut with what the menu said was a mandarin orange sauce. It was instead the thyme butter sauce from the swordfish, but I forgave it because it was nice & moist. Hammer chose my side which was onion rings. They were great.
Jay seriously needs someone to run the place because he's not doing a good job. The selection of white wine is horrible. There wasn't any Barnacle merchandise for sale. When I come into town I'll easily spend $100 on hats & shirts, not this time. The prices on the menu are a bit high but he also takes Amex. It seems like he had to be pulled kicking & screaming to accept it. If there are issues with service from the kitchen I've never noticed, but then again I come to drink. The Barnacle does have the best mixed drinks that I've had anywhere. The 5th star goes to Jimmy, Danny, Hammer, Beth & even Reed... The bartenders are excellent!
When I've eaten in the diningroom or on the deck, I generally ask for Lisa. Service has been slow at times, but come on, when the dining room is packed you can't expect the server to provide you with immediate attention. The view of the harbor is great but you can't really see it from the bar. Maybe I'll get lucky & the alien will be there. He makes great whale sounds.
Worst service imaginable, except for the bartenders who are friendly, funny, outgoing, fast, and not bad to look at. The wait staff don't pay attention, never come back to ask you for drink refills, and are not personal and friendly. I go there a lot and refuse to sit in the restaurant section. They need to address this, because tourists constantly come but never comeBACK and that's the key to success. If you go - sit in the bar. It's totally casual and if you're going to be at a place like this, give your money to the bar.
Another Header here - The Barnicle has great seafood, but it always feels rushed, like most tourist places. The tables are exceeding small, so as good as it is, it's not a relaxing experience. Maybe a once-a-year place because the view from the porch is so great if you're lucky enough to eat out there.
