So lucky to get in for Restaurant Week: I'm always ready to try out an upscale restaurant in Boston, but I usually need to wait for Restaurant Week to roll around to actually indulge. Even then the menus tend to be so limited that you never get a good sense for a restaurant's full menu. Not the case with Meritage. Not only did they offer a phenomenal selection of appetizers, entrees and desserts (four options for each), but they also brought us samplings other specialties in between courses.
I can't even begin to explain how much I enjoyed this meal. I seriously felt some emotions over my food that I don't feel over most people -- if you know what I mean! I started with the crab stuffed shrimp, which had a cream corn based sauce over the top. I literally wiped the plate clean with my three pieces of specialties breads -- including a perfectly crisp-on-the-outside, soft-on-the-inside potato roll. Then a sample of the vegetable soup, which is anything but average. I would have enjoyed a whole bowl of this as an appetizer. Then on to the filet mignon with whipped potatoes, broccoli rabe and glazed carrots. The steak was mouthwatering and so tender, it didn't even need the tasty garnish on top. After practically licking that plate clean (my manners were out the window by this point), on to the desserts. Each dessert option offered a sample of three -- so a sampling of three chocolate desserts or three nut desserts or three fruit desserts, etc. Thank god my table of eight women was completely prepared to share because I don't think I had a favorite choice from any one plate -- although I did save my pumpkin tart for last! To top it all off, our kind and very diligent waiter brought out a piece of berry tart, yet another specialty sample from the chef.
Overall, the experience was amazing. Every single bite of food was indescribably good, we had a gorgeous view of the bay, the waitstaff was top-notch and, how could I forget, the wine with each course was perfectly paired. I would go back here in a heartbeat, no matter how much it cost.
