There was no hostess to check in with when you arrived at the restaurant. Basically it was a first come first serve, even people without reservations were seated before my party. Also, the food was average at best and way overpriced. The service was incredibly rude, even had the audacity to question the amount of my tip left saying " there is a minimum of 18% tip required here." First off, that was not posted anyone in the restaurant, not even on the receipt. I always learned that it is customary to give 10% or slightly above but the fact that he came up to me and said that I will never forget. I understand it must have been a busy night for him but his service was average and did not warrant an 18% tip. I will certainly never be going back and I recommend that others do the same.
great owner, great italian food: i live in sf and north beach (little italy) is famous for their good italian food. so when i visited boston i expect alot out of italian food. when i ate at dolce it was very good and tasty. i would recommend this place. there are dozens of italian restaurants on this street, but dolce sticks out. the owner is very nice. the sign inside reads 'if you dont like the food, you dont have to pay' - very confident owner.
We come to Boston 3-4 times a year and each time we end up at this marvelous restaurant. As others have said, he treats you like family and I know he doesn't recognize us from the few times a year we go there but each time when I say "yai, yai, yai, I haven't got reservations", he gives me a hug and a wink and always manages to get us a table in fairly short order. Having a drink at the small bar and taking in the atmosphere of the place is a great way to kill the time waiting.
Then comes the food! Delicioso! I usually get the 1/2 lobster on linguini diavolo and man it is to die for!
The atmosphere is wonderful and when someone has a birthday he turns the lights off and everybody sings. The strolling music is just another great touch and a bit of old Italy (to at least a non-Italian, LOL). But don't go there, because like Yogi says, it's SOOOOO busy there, that nobody goes there any more, LOL and I want a table for us next weekend.
