| About: | Casa Romero is an ideal location for couples and anyone seeking some serenity with their salsa. The outdoor courtyard is gorgeous in nice weather, and the attractive Back Bay clientele make for prime people-watching anytime. The restaurant is actually tucked away in a basement on a side street of Newbury Street , and the food sells itself. The seafood is first-rate, and the meats also impress. Quench your thirst with a pitcher of sangria or a salty margarita for the ultimate Mexican dining experience. |

I couldn't more strongly recommend that you avoid this restaurant. In 20 years of dining in Boston, this place provided me with the worst experience I've ever had. I made the mistake of ordering the ceviche...a delicious appetizer at most restaurants that offer it. I took the first bite of the fish, and as I did, I looked down at my plate and noticed something odd...my food appeared to be moving. Upon closer inspection, I discerned hundreds, if not thousands, of small, white, wriggling worms in my food. I spit out the first bite and got the waitress's attention. She was apologetic, and told me to speak to the owner, who happened to be there. I approached the owner, told him what had happened, and he told me that it wasn't a big deal, and that often, the fish that they get have worms in them...it was just the nature of the fish. I was mortified. I told him that he either A) needed to stop serving fish; or B) put on the menu a disclaimer that the fish may have living worms in it. He shrugged me off, offered me no recompense for the meal, and was completely arrogant and unapologetic.
I have and will NEVER ever again eat at Casa Romero. My 10 friends who were with me that night have never returned, and everyone I know who asks where they might get good Mexican food are always told this story, and they will never go there either. I suggest you do the same. Try "Tu Y Yo" in Somerville which is as close to authentic Mexican as it gets in Boston, or "Sol Azteca" in Brookline...they're very nice there...and their food is most certainly not wriggling on your plate.
My Wife and I dined at Casa Romero this past weekend, and the whole experience was a delightful treat. Hailing from the American Southwest, I've struggled to find authentic Mexican food in New England. But once we stepped out of the alleyway and into the cozy, warm atmosphere of Mr. Romero's restaurant, we knew that we had found a hidden jewel. The carne asada steak was wonderfully prepared, the corn tamales were authentic and mild, the mole sauce was rich with a hint of chocolate, and -- for the finale -- the pastel de tres leches was heavenly. On a Saturday night, most of our fellow diners were a sharp-dressed lot, aged 25-40. Reservations recommended, though we walked in and just barely beat the dinner rush. Park in the garage on Dalton Street (not the Prudential Center), and the restaurant validation knocks your parking cost down to $7.
lack of good Mexican restaurants in Boston: Food was ok ambiance great but when the service is as poor as we experienced it spoils what could be a great spot.
The staff was poorly trained not attentive and rushed us out so theuy could handle the next party and this is after spending $800,
A complete and total disaster.By the time we got our food we wanted to throw it at the staff. We were then threatened that the police would be called if an 18% tip were not given.
A complete nightmare and embarassing to my guests
