I ate here before a play on a Thursday night. The food was some of the best I have ever had. The four of us at the table each had something different and everyone was happy with their choices. The salad with the warm egg on top was soooo delicious and the dinner portions were perfect - just the perfect amount of everything. I would eat here again. Only downside - even though we told the wait person when we got there at 5:30 that we had a 7:30 show, he was super slow and didn't seem to care that we didn't have all the time in the world. We had to skip the dessert - which came with the prix fix meal. And we still missed the opening number of the show because our check was so long in coming. Next time I will leave more time so that I can try some dessert and maybe try to get a different waiter.
Pigalle is a French restaurant in an easily accessible location in Boston. We took the T (metro) to Park and walked there from the station in less than ten minutes. There is a parking garage nearby also.
The visit to Pigalle was made on August 11, 2007 at 5:30 for restaurant week. During this week all restaurants serve a three-course fixed-price menu for $33. There were few people there so early and the atmosphere was simple and inviting. Everything seemed very nice and clean. The hostess was fast to seat us even though we were early and the waiter was knowledgeable and friendly.
My only complaint about the atmosphere is that the restaurant is very small and we were seated right next to the restrooms, which aren't separated from the dining area as much as most. The traffic and sound of toilets flushing really hurt the enjoyment of such a wonderful atmosphere. I would recommend asking for a table away from the restroom when making a reservation.
For an appetizer I had the Tuna Martini with Seaweed Salad, Spicy Créme Fraîche and Tobiko Roe. This appetizer was extremely good and I would give this part of my experience/meal 5 stars. I enjoy sushi but somehow this was better than sushi even though it had the same components. This was not a dish I expected to find on a French menu but it was a nice surprise.
For dinner I had the Crispy Half Duckling with Potato Galette, Onion Jam, Cherry Sauce
and Braised Endive. This was the disappointing part of my meal. For an upscale restaurant in Boston I hold it to high standards and this dish didnât pass. The duck was overcooked to the point that the parts that should have been crispy were chewy and hard as leather. The cherry sauce was good but didnât have the âwow factorâ I had hoped for. The rest of the dish was quite delicious but I had to mark the rating for this restaurant down considerably for this one dish â it is the main course after all. I would like to say, however, that another person ordered the same dish and didnât seem to have the same problem but we both agreed that the âsidesâ to this dish were better than the duck itself.
For dessert I had a vanilla cake with fresh berries. The cake itself didnât seem to be anything special but the raspberry and orange collie made this dish stand out. The raspberry coolie was presented in the shape of a flower with the orange coolie outlining its shape. Not only did it look good but it tasted great.
Overall I think the regular menu is too highly priced for its own good but it was worth going to for restaurant week.
Fabulous Food in a Quiet & Cozy Setting: Go to Pigalle as much for its excellent atmosphere as for its outstanding food. The wait staff is very attentive but not overbearing. The food is simply outstanding. While the tables are a bit close together, the design still creates an intimate atmosphere, which is perfect for couples. It's a fairly small restaurant so larger groups may want to look elsewhere. Highly recommended.
