GOOD: Next best in line other then Cafe Mami.
Porter Sq. is where you get authentic Japanese food.
not other Chinese owned japanese food places mostly in Boston.
A Hidden Treasure: If you have never tried Japanese food or sushi this is the place to start. Come prepared because this is a true Japanese restaurant and they're not about to hand you a fork, knife, or spoon. The value is very good and the food is excellent. To be honest the service seems relaxed and the ambiance is lacking but the food is well worth the wait and the small restaurant is always quiet and easy to converse in. I think it is fun to sit at the sushi bar because it is fun to watch the chef prepare the sushi. Be sure to order the Tatsuta'age as an appetizer, miso soup, and some sushi on their specialized ordering sheet you'll be handed with your menu. The sheet makes it easy to choose from more types of sushi and sashimi than you could ever remember. And although I was encouraged by a waitress one day not to get a yam dish... I have to say I haven't come across a dish I don't like. One day I may muster up the courage to get that yam and write about that. Until then, I don't know how they prepare their rice but it somehow stands out. So go hungry and eat a meal like you have never eaten before. Oh! And be sure to go early because Porter Exchange is full of interesting shops that you'll want to check out. It's a diamond in the ruff.
Excellent inexpensive sushi: Fresh sushi for a great price. The best bang for buck is to create your own assortment from a wide selection: 18 pieces for $16 or 25 pieces for $21, for example. Pieces are a bit smaller but still a fantastic deal for a sit-down meal.
