I have been going to Savvy for about two years now, since I began my freshman year at Harvard. After a rather unfortunate haircut in Harvard Square, I came across Savvy and decided to try it out because there were so many good reviews. I scheduled my first appointment with Helen, and needless to say I have been going back to here ever since. I have never had a better haircut in my life. She knows your hair by the end of the second appointment! She is always very kind and definitely has a passion for cutting hair, which shows. I am very glad I came across this small shop in Inman Square, and I would absolutely recommend Helen for one of the best haircuts you can get.
Oh, and she is an amazing stylist. :-)
This place is definitely clean and well managed with a friendly staff. I had my hair cut and colored by Helen for about a year and was really pleased at first--but towards the end, it seemed something was lacking. Great person and conversation, but she missed a large chunk of root touch up on one of my colors and when I called to let her know, she seemed amazed that this could happen and sort of put off by it. Although she told me "if it really bothered me" I could come back, I didn't. When I called to schedule another appt. a month later and she was unavailable, I chanced going somewhere else. I then found (and I have long hair, which I usually wear up) that my hair was completely uneven in cut and really looking at my color, there was about 3 different tones(really dark, med and light) , starting at my root going to the ends. I would think a great artist who truly cared what their "name" was on would have seen these errors after a year long client relationship and done something to make it look better! Liked her, but I guess it wasn't meant to be....
Savvy is a comfortable space. It is a small neighborhood salon. It isn't fancy-schmancy at all. You might see all the good reviews and expect a swank place, but that isn't the kind of place this is. It's comfy, like a familiar pair of jeans. What people are raving about is that the stylists are skilled, friendly, extremely attentive and down-to-earth and the work they do is consistently good. It is what it is, and what it is is good!
I have been coming in to Savvy for highlights and haircuts for nearly 5 years. After buying a house I needed to find a less expensive alternative to my previous salon. I think it's ironic that I'm paying less money for what turns out to be a more relaxing experience for me. These hairdressers are never inconvenienced by anything you ask. They don't talk down to you or converse with each other as if you aren't even there, which is something I've experienced in other salons I've tried. I always walk out of there refreshed but still feeling like myself.
One thing I know for sure is that if you let them know if you aren't happy with your cut or color, they are more than happy to make any adjustment you need. I've gone back to get my hair cut shorter or tweaked a little a couple of times in the years that I've been going there. It wasn't a problem, the adjustment was made, and I remain a satisfied customer. Not letting them know if you aren't happy and then writing a negative review is passive-aggressive and nothing short of a cheap shot. There's definitely evidence of some of that behavior here online. The stylists at Savvy are cautious and they stay on the safe side. That has been reassuring to keep in mind. All you ever have to do is speak up, let your wishes be known and they'll be receptive to you. These are people that are very, very easy to talk to.
Also, if you expect a life-changing experience or want the red carpet/rock star/princess/super model transformation, this really might not be your salon. This is more a place for people who are looking for wash and wear, low maintenance, artfully crafted haircuts that last and grow in well. If you're high maintenance or accustomed to high-end accoutrements, this place is simple and basic so it very likely won't live up to the same expectations you might have for the type of upscale salon more suited to your taste.
The casual atmosphere always feels welcoming, the staff is friendly and professional. You don't have to dress up to go there. I just had to add my two cents because the folks at Savvy have been very good to me over the years. Helen does my very natural looking highlights and my simple haircut. I've had the other stylists fill in for haircuts if she's busy and there's no odd feeling of disloyalty that I've had at other salons when my usual stylist at the time was unavailable. The facial waxing has come in handy, too. Everyone there is great. You really should try these guys. They're just the kind of stylists you'd expect to find in the People's Republic of Cambridge!

I just want to let you know that I really do feel very badly about your having had this experience and that I wish I had been given a chance to correct the problem. The words "If it really bothers you" sound very unlike words that I would use and being put off is not a fair description of my demeanor, for those who haven't met me. I am very conscious of how I come across. I wonder if another stylist may have taken your call. Anyone who knows me at all knows that I would be much more inclined to say something more along the lines of "Please come on down and let's do what we need to do as soon as we can do it!". I am genuinely sorry that I was not able to continue serving you and I am always appreciative of constructive criticism which I will put to good use toward becoming an even better hairdresser.
