I live near Newton city hall, and until Home Depot put it out of business, Mass Hardware was my store of choice. I did not expect anything special, when I walked into Harvey's, and I was blown away. The big box stores are like Walmart's-- or maybe Target, since they have some quality products. But they do not have top-of-the-line gardening products (e.g., I just bought a steel hose trolley and refilled a small propane tank and found clippers, etc. much better than those in the big stores). And they give good advice (e.g. to mix an anti-desiccant from $20 worth of concentrate and spray it myself, instead of paying a lawn service $500 to do a two-hour job, and how to make my mosquito magnet work, when the company, itself, could not tell me). I am pretty well stocked with tools, or I am sure I would have a similar story to tell about help choosing them. It is worth a lot to be able to trust a store to sell you the right/best thing the first time, to tell you how to use it, and to stand behind it.
Twice in the past month, Harvey's has had what I need. I've gone to a closer hardware place, and been out-of-luck, and I've simply asked the experts at Harvey's, and poof, they have what I need. Amazing actually. I shouldn't waste my time with 'the depot' anymore. This place will save you A LOT OF TIME.
I have been a resident of Needham for over 20 years. While others stores come and go, Harvey's is an institution. No matter how strange the project, Harvey's always comes through with the part for the job (and I've had my share of strange projects, including parts to build a telescope, glider fuselage cradle and strange, custom-made antennas, not to mention dealing with the usual wear and tear of our aging house). If it's not in stock (rarely an issue), they'll know how to find it. If it's an older house part, they just might have a few spares sitting in the back of the basement for you. The family and staff that run this store really understand what they're doing, and are extremely helpful. Totally different experience than the usual chain store.
