If I could give this 4 1/2 stars, I would. I stumbled on this place after I stopped to get gas (cheaper than in NJ!) and puttered along trying to find a NOT chain eatery, preferably Portuguese. Bingo! I had a stuffed quahog with way too much filling as a "starter." It was huge, flavorful, but on the dry side, and had I known what my entree would look like, I'd not have ordered it. I had the Portuguese bean stew with a few beans, loads of pork and likely beef and a bit of linguica and cabbage. It was beyond delicious! A true "grandma's kitchen" dish complete with bones and broth. I sometimes eat in the Ironbound in Newark where most of the menus are similar, even in my favorite place on Elm St. This seemed like the real thing. Can't wait to do it again. By the way, the fourth and final portion waits until tomorrow.
WOW.
We were passing through New Bedford on a trip, and got recommendation from the motel. What a hit. Excellent tastes, more than you can eat in a week, and fine service. A real local atmosphere. We'll go out of our way to come back.
Best Portuguese food in town. Consistent, huge portions, well priced, authentic food. I recommend the chicken Antonio (a delicious Mozambique dish) with shrimp croquettes as an appetizer.
