I used to go to Wilcox Tavern years ago and was looking forward to returning. When we arrived, we were told there was an approximate 20 to 30 minute wait. We opted to stay and have a cocktail in the bar area. After more than 5 minutes of not being engaged by the bar wait staff, we ordered our drinks at the bar. We were told our drinks would be delivered to us and to return to our seats. As we were waiting, a group of 4 showed up and they also went to the bar to order their drinks. They were not told to return to their seats, instead, they were given their drinks directly. After 10 minutes, we were called back to the bar by the bartender and told to pick up our drinks. One of the drinks was made incorrectly so we had to wait while the bartender re-made the drink. Meanwhile, the wine and other cocktail had since warmed as they sat on the bar for 10 minutes. We paid for our drinks and returned to our seats without apology or mention from the bar staff.
We were seated within the originally defined timeframe of 20 to 30 minutes. Our server was very attentive and the food was very good.
We received the check and thought our evening had turned around. Wrong. We checked our bill and noticed the $30 bar tab which we had paid for from the aforementioned bar scene debacle, was included in our bill. Had we not checked the bill, we would have paid for our bar tab twice! Again, no apology or acknowledgment from the staff (with the exception of our waitress who made it quite clear, verbally, that she was having as terrible evening as we were having).
As we left the establishment, we were not asked how we enjoyed our meal or our visit by the woman who had originally greeted us. Instead, as we walked by, she did manage a 'have a good night' to us without lifting her head.
We will not be retuning to Wilcox Tavern. There are many other establishments in and around the Westerly area with comparable food - but with FAR better service and respect for it's patrons. It's dis-heartening to be treated the way we were treated when we are locals and would have patronized this restaurant during the area's off season. Good Luck Wilcox Tavern and good luck to you if you decide to include this restaurant during your visit to South County. Please remember to CHECK YOUR BILL!
While we were apprehensive to go based on the last review we ended up having a very good meal. The ambience was very comfortable, the staff was pleasant and the seating was not crowded. I had lobster bisque soup which was good and a ceasar salad. My wife and I had the filet with crab meat entree. Mine was cooked perfectly to my liking, my wife's was a bit cooler than she would have liked though it was not enough of an issue to send it back. We also had the home-made carrot cake and chocolate pie that were phenomenal.
Perfect example why one should check to see when a restaurant gets their fresh seafood. My son & daughter-in-law went there for dinner on Tuesday 8 July 2008 and both got very sick from their seafood dishes. They are still recovering today.
I live in the area & I used to consider this one of the better restaurants in the area...not any more. They saved money by using taintred seafood, but lost any recommendation that I would give.
