Good food, great atmosphere!: I was introduced to this restaurant/bar last summer by a native after I had moved back to RI and was re-discovering the Newport area. What a great place! The atmosphere is fantastic, starting with the walk down the side street to get to the Cheeky. Once inside, I recommend that you sit at the bar or the area behind the bar (near the restrooms) for the best effect. Subtle lighting and tasteful, yet fabulously fun decor. And a trip to the Cheeky requires at least one trip to the restroom (either one) for some unbelievable furnishings. The bar service is friendly and funny. The other dining areas are more elegant, but the ambiance has managed to spill over nonetheles.
only for drinks: The best thing about this place is the drink menu. It features a dozen or so very clever, extremely tasty (& potent) concoctions, many of which fit the monkey theme. The Chimp Sling mixes banana liquour & Baileys in a sublime sweet sipper. The martinis range from Effin' Great (black cherry vodka & Starbucks liquour) to Key Lime (tart & refreshing, better than an Appletini). But the dinner menu is brief & unimaginative. The calamari appetizer was painfully spicey with no balancing flavors or coolness (think buffalo wings w/out the blue cheese dip). The lobster bisque contained a stick of butter, a quart of sherry, but little lobster. The seafood paella was the best of the lot with plenty of fresh mussles, shrimp, & a fat lobster claw, plus chorizo. I'd go back for drinks but skip the meal. However, the bar area is very crowded & noisy on weekend nights.
