The modern diner has two big pros. First, it's one of the last airstream style diners around, and stepping in there does feel like going back in time to the 40s or something. So the ambience is cool. Second, their specials are amazing. If you go on a weekend, there are often a dozen or more specials to choose from.
The cons are the often long waits on weekends (due to the places popularity) and the fact that they only take cash - so remember to bring some. When the place is busy on weekends I do admit I feel rushed when eating - it's not really the type of place where you can linger over several cups of coffee.
I always wanted to check this place out...especially since I saw it in "Eat. Shop. Rhode Island". But I must say I was kind of disappointed. First of all, our waitress was VERY unpleasant. I asked her what the specials were (since most things I heard about weren't on the menu) and instead of telling me, she made me go back up to the front to look at the specials board. And then my friend asked her what the difference was between a frappe and a cabinet, and she said that one had milk and one had ice cream. So my friend said asked which one had which, and our waitress replied that it doesn't really matter because they make them all the same way! So besides the unpleasant waitress which could be hit or miss, they were kind of acting wierd about where people sat, the place wasn't that clean, and it was pretty uncomfortable. The food was ok. We got the Jimmie Gimme's and the Custard French Toast. Both were good...but it didn't make up for the rest of the experience. I would recommend Stanley's Diner on Dexter Street in Pawtucket.
