We chose the Mile Away as the venue for our wedding and I must say that while many aspects of the experience were great, a few 'errors' by the staff made the experience less than perfect for me. First, we had ordered punch so that our guests could have something to drink immediately after the outdoor ceremony. I asked the owner's wife to bring out the punch, but instead of the punch bowl we'd ordered she brought a glass of punch to my bride. Admittedly, this would seem to be much ado about nothing, but as a result, our guests went immediately to the open bar, where they helped themselves to expensive Bloody Mary's and mixed drinks of every variety.
We had purchased several cases of wine from the Mile Away to be served during our dinner. But as I sat at the head table eating my salad, I realized with a start that my guests were still going to the open bar. The waitresses made at best a half-hearted effort to offer my wine to my guests; as a result, they contined to order expensive drinks at the open bar through the first half of the dinner, when I finally went out to the bar to ask the owner what had become of the wine I'd purchased. At that point, a few bottles were brought out to my guests. While I was at the bar talking to the owner, I noticed that he'd taped a large sign to the cash register: "OPEN BAR" Tacky, tacky tacky!
The bottom line is that my open bar bill ran nearly $1,000 over budget. What I really do resent is the fact that I had to spend my time at my own wedding dealing with punch, open bar signs, and wait staff failures!
The food is fine. The setting is lovely. But for a wedding or other event? Hold onto your wallet! Either I had the misfortune of scheduling my wedding on a day when a few things happened to go awry, or these were deliberate 'oversights,' intented to run up my bar tab. In either case, I should have refused to pay the bill. But it was after all my wedding day and it was the wrong time and place for me to argue about a bill. My advice: Eat, drink and be merry at the Mile Away, but for a wedding or event, go somewhere else.
Wonderful food, upscale menu without the upscale prices or dress codes. Located just off routes 101 and 13 in a lovely barn with fun decor. Dinners range from about $20 - $30 for a full 4 course meal, appetizer, salad, choice of starch, choice of veggie, and dessert. Food is "Western European" with dishes such as Chicken or Veal Picatta, Wienerschnitzel, Chicken Provencale, Rack of Lamb, Seafood Sophia, etc. Also have a nice Porter on tap. Add a friendly staff and you have a great place to eat!
The first time I went the food though plentiful, was bland. The second time (just in case the first time was a fluke) the food was not only tastelessly bland but greasy as well, there was a film of oil over the sauce, the meat and the vegetables, I will NOT go there again!
