First, let's be clear: Shorty's does not serve authentic Mexican food. That being stated, the food they do serve is acceptable although not outstanding. I've eaten there several times ordering differnt items each time. The roasted chicken in their salad had the flavor and texture of dry-aged wood. Their jalapeno poppers are excellent however. I see lots of ratings of this restaurant based on margaritas. I would say, don't go here for food based on ratings of margaritas.
Shorty's used to be very good, but the Hooksett location has gone down hill lately. I was eating at the bar, and ordered a burrito that had rice in it. When I got it, the rice was so undercooked that it was crunchy. I told the bartender, and his remark was "oh yeah I hate it when that happens".
If you want good Mexican, go to CJ's.
My wife and I have been going to Shortyâs for 20 years now. In the early years, the food was usually great and drinks good. As they expanded to a chain they have gone through some rough spots with menu changes and management changes but they seem to come back to center. As I write this in October 2007, they seem to have settled into a good menu which is quite good. The quality of the food lately has been good, and the service fine. Prices are fair and atmosphere is average. This location offers a good bar area but still offers quieter seating areas for diners. I recommend this place often.
