Loved by the locals: The food is really good, they also have thier own bakery where Sare makes the best bread in town. It is really worth checking out if you are in town.
A NIGHT AT SLATES: I had been planning this visit to Slates for quite awhile and was looking forward to a great meal with my friend. I have been to Slates many times, so I knew what to expect in the way of food and beverage. On my previous visits I always had great service to go along with the great food, but tonight wasn't going to be my night.
When we arrived, we went to the bar to have a pre-dinner drink. The bartenders at Slates are really friendly and know how to pour whiskey with the best of them. We enjoyed our drinks and waited for our reservation and were seated right on time. I was in the mood for some red meat and I decided to order the tenderloin medalions; my friend wanted chicken with pasta so we were ready to order a great meal. The only problem was that our server wasn't in the mood to take anyone's order that evening. She finally came around our table and took our drink order; we got a good bottle of wine which we waited a good long time for. When the wine did arrive, the server didn't know how to open it which became an ordeal in itself.
After the wine fiasco, we finally got to order dinner; after ordering, we enjoyed the acoustic guitar music and enjoyed our wine and patiently waited for dinner. Dinner came and the entree's look wonderful and tasted wonderful. All I needed to enjoy this meal was a steak knife. I am only guessing, but I am pretty sure our server felt her job was finished after we received our entrees because we never saw her again till she brought us the check.
I managed to get my own steak knife and we proceeded to enjoy our meal despite the fact we knew we were on our own for the rest of the meal. I have to say the food was fantastic and the atmosphere was great, but our service on this evening was well below what should be expected for what we paid per entree.
We finished our meal and then skipped coffee and dessert because we knew it would have been such an ordeal to convince our server we needed something. We did see her again on our way out the door...she was chatting with someone at the bar while the rest of her table languished at their table.
We went back to my house for coffee and after dinner drinks and discussed our dining experience at Slates. We decided that the food and atmosphere were outstanding, but they need to train their wait staff to bring the level of service up to where the food is. I will go back to Slates, but I am eating at the bar.
mixed review: I thought the food was very good. The restaurant is in a neat location and has a lot of character. Unfortunately, my family and I had a very bad experience with the waitor and probably would not go back. I do not want to discourage others, it could have been a fluke. All and all it is worth checking out I just had a bad experience.
