Cute place with a casual and cozy feel. I don't live in the area anymore, and I do miss this place. They have fabulous wings and french onion soup. Cheesesteaks aren't bad either (coming from a Jersey girl). Check it out, you won't be dissapointed.
Nice ambiance - food needs improvement: I got a steak sub and it was not good. Fries were good, and I got the best Shirley Temple to drink!
The ambiance made the meal enjoyable, not the food.
I'll Have the Usual: The Whig and Courier has been a mainstay in the Bangor area for the last 23 years. Many times during the week they feature local musicians on guitar or keyboard during the dinner hours. During the summer they also offer the Whig and Courier Café located outside of the establishment, and catering to those that would prefer their lunches or a snack while outdoors.
They have a fairly large menu for a Pub with regular daily specials. The pizza and a number of appetizers are surprisingly good. As a pub they do stock an excellent selection of beer on tap, and in bottles, consisting of local Maine brews to domestic and premium varieties. They also have a well prepared bar for mixed drinks, and a few different types of wines.
The owner and his staff are very friendly and try to do everything they can to make your visit enjoyable. Many of the patrons and staff members are on first name basis, and if one becomes a regular, often times they know what you want before you order.
There are a few downsides; one is that sometimes service is a little slow because of the individual attention that you receive and the fact that it is regularly busy. Another is that as they do not carry or mix some of the more popular âclubâ drinks, which many people my age are looking for. Finally, due to its size, sometimes seating becomes an issue, the bar only seats six to eight, especially on Friday and Saturday nights.
The Whig and Courier fits a niche that Bangor needs filled. A casual atmosphere where one can go and have a good time with friends without worrying about the potential problems that come from inhabiting clubs or larger drinking establishments.
