So over priced of such a small lobster roll, I do like the place but with there prices going up and the size of the food you get getting smaller its not the place it used to be.
The Red Barn is probably one of the most affordable family restaurants in the entire state, and quite possibly one of the best ones around. Numerous times I've had the pleasure of going to The Red Barn and eating their famous Chicken Basket, and to this day I consider it one of the best tasting and best priced items to ever have at any restaurant.
Menu:
The size of the menu is typical of any family restaurant; it has enough variety but not enough so that you have a hard time deciding what you want to eat. Their menu contains various sandwiches such as a basic Hamburger to a more sophisticated Lobster Roll. However, the best part of the menu is their baskets. Their baskets consists of some type of meat (be it boneless white meat chicken, scallops, clams, shrimp, pork, or haddock) along with french fries, a roll, and cole slaw. Now, anybody reading this is probably going to say "well, I can get that just about anywhere". Perhaps you can, but I must add that the portion sizes in these baskets are HUGE. Even a big guy like myself with a huge appetite for chicken cannot easily finish the entire basket in one sitting. I tend to always have leftovers. The best part is, most of these baskets are under $9.00 (with the execption of the seafood baskets, because those usually go by market prices). And if the baskets don't seem to grab your fancy, the Red Barn has one of the state's best Seafood Stews (the Stew has won numerous awards for being the best Stew).
Atmosphere:
From the outside, the Red Barn looks just like its name implies... a big red barn. Inside however is where the real charm is. The cozy little dining area is always filled with people enjoying their meal, chatting away with smiles on their faces. And if the dining area is full, don't fret because you can always use the tented picnic area just outside (that is, unless of course it is winter time, then your car will have to do).
Cleanliness:
This restaurant isn't one of those dives that you see in the movies where you don't know what you're eating or where it came from. As soon as someone leaves a table, there is always somebody immediately there to wipe it down (this is a big plus especially since this is a order then seat-yourself type of restaurant). I've never worried once about the floors or the tables having anything nasty on it.
Friendliness:
As many times as I've been there, I've never seen any of the staff without a smile on their face. They are always warm and inviting and willing to chat away if the time allows. Normally I am afraid to ask the cashiers at other places if they have extra Sweet & Sour sauce, but they make me feel like I am one of the family.
Healthiness:
If you're looking for a diet-type menu, this definitely isn't the place you want to go. Everything here is grilled or deep fried to perfection with poritions big enough to fill the 4 stomachs of a cow (ok, I fib a bit, but you get the picture), so the health factor may not be winning any points here. You can get side orders of salads and even a veggie plate, but those alone are probably one of the few low-calorie choices here.
Summary:
The Red Barn is definitely one of the must-visit restaurants in this State. It isn't the fanciest of establishments, but you don't have to be afraid to take your children there and there's plenty of food to go around that won't put a dent in your wallet.
Awesome food - if you're in the Augusta area and looking for great chicken/seafood, this is the place to go. They're quick, with good prices and did I mention DELICIOUS???
