For the price the food just doesn't cut it. I'm a southern boy that loves his BBQ. Down south they would go out of business in a week.
I love this place. I went to school in Memphis, and this is as close as it gets without being there. On balance, maybe even better than most "real SO. BBQ joints" because they are not focused on one thing, but do pulled pork, shredded beef, ribs, chicken, even some tex/mex and Cajun type stuff. Yes the meat is not as smokey as some places in Memphis, but it lets you taste that delicious pork and spice without being overcome by smoke. My one complaint about BBQ is that it is often dried out, not here moist and tender. Service is great but sometimes a tad slow at lunch when it's busy, so go early.
What a disappointment! I am from Memphis (where the REAL Beale Street is located) and I was so excited when I found Beale Street BBQ. The meat was good, tender, and moist, but NOT what you would expect for good Southern BBQ. Real BBQ is smoked for hours and hours over hickory, mesquite, and other aromatic woods. This was a "no-smoking" restaurant when it comes to the BBQ. It totally lacked that special flavor of meat that has slow cooked in a good old-fashion smoker.
The prices were moderate and the service was acceptable, but the food was a good solid disappointment, mediocre at best. There isn't a lot of true BBQ in Maine, but it can be found...just not here.
