10/4/08 We went to Rustica about 1 1/2 weeks ago. Our first impression was great. Liked the atmosphere and the waitress was prompt and very pleasant. Answered all out questions. We ordered a meal that was mussels, shrimp and calamari over pasta. No salad came with it. First time we were ever at an Italian restaurant where the salad did not come with the meal. The flavor of the sauce was excellent. A lot of the mussels were empty and those that had mussels in them the mussels were so small (about the size of a pea) you did not get a mussel taste. The shrimp and calamari were both tough. The pasta portion was very small. There was about 1/2 cup of pasta. If it weren't for the bread, which we asked for a second helping of we'd of gone away hungry.
We had a GREAT meal at a reasonable cost. Especially recommend the rissotto-best we ever had!
Had we not had this immediate, negative experience, I might have enjoyed the food others are raving about.
We were seated by a very pleasant, professional staff person, who also brought water. I went to wash up, returned, and had just began speaking with my friend, when, quite unexpectedly, another staff member, who was to be our waitress, quite nearly pounced upon us. (The restaurant was not, by any means, crowded).
We looked up and said we were sorry, we weren't ready to order just yet. She said, with a definite glare, "I JUST want to tell you our specials." We murmured things like, "Oh, okay, yes, but..we think we alredy know what we want." And then the waitress stormed away as suddenly as she had blown in.
Now, we are not inexperienced in restaurants of all types. Rustica is supposed to be more civilized. Despite the neat hair and black and white 'uniform', this server was quite like a "tough". Thank you, but no, thank you. We left.
I'll say, too, that in no restaurant, whether a genuine diner, nor a posh place, should one not take a hint when all servers are standing in a group, which they were. The food may be wonderful, but I'll never taste it.

Have NEVER had a small serving of anything at Rustica - not once. Portions are actually huge. And as for "no salad" - quite normal outside the chain restaurants.
