My husband was born and raised in West Brat, and we go up to visit his parents quite often. At least every other trip we stop at the Vermont Country Deli. What a find! In winter it's full of NY skiers, and the locals know you NEVER park in the parking lot. You'll never get out, park on the street. But other times during the year, the crowds are fine. The deli is right next to an awesome farmers' market that runs in the summer. I've always been impressed with the price to serving ratio. It's $5 for a huge turkey sandwich with all the topics. Another $1.50 for their HUGE chocolate chip cookies. The desserts in general are to die for. My first time up to Vermont my now-husband, then summer fling brought me on a picnic on the Connecticut River with Vermont Country Deli fare and I was hooked. Some things, the things gauged for tourists, are overpriced. Maple syrup, jam, jellies. But if you stick to sandwiches and their fresh food bar (various potato and pasta salads, chicken wings, brown beans, etc.) you should find a good deal for your money. The people there have always been nice to us and never snobby. The food is fresh, local, and delish. Try the wheat berry bread!
Always crowded, food good but it is a touristy place, very pricey for small portions. Had a snobbish yuppie feel to it. If you want a yummy take-out lunch and don't mind paying alot for it, you won't be disappointed. Lots of "gourmet" selections, shelves fun to browse through.
Our ski club has chosen this spot to be our dinner stop on our way home. The food is O.K., but is not worth the outrageous prices charged. Once, I selected the pork sandwich (about $8) and asked for a side of cole slaw (offered on board under sandwich choice) and I was hit with an additional charge of $3 something (after they weighed it). I picked up a bag of chips (without printed price) and they attempted to charge me $5 for them! (Upon questioning, they reduced the price to $2.99)
Additionally, for an establishment that derives its income from thousands of tourists daily, they should pony up and build their own bathroom, and not mooch off the SINGLE bathroom next door at the gas station. They are making more than enough money to be able to provide bathroom facilities to their patrons. Fast food restaurants do much better at providing facilities than the Vermont County Deli.
If you do stop at this establishment, be careful with your choices, and don't let the cashier rob you!
