As a local with the number of non-bagel breakfast options countable on one hand, I will not be a returning customer. The Cons: After waiting outside in the rain 5 minutes past the opening hours posted on the door, my sister and I were the third party seated. We were asked if we wanted drinks 25 minutes later. At this time, we were one of 5 or 6 average-sized parties in the restaurant. Just as we were putting our coats back on to try our luck elsewhere, we were asked about drinks. I asked the waitress if we would be able to place our food order with our drinks, hoping we'd be able to eat breakfast prior to sunset. I was told that it would be a lot easier if I just placed my drink order, and that, honestly, it wouldn't be any faster. After finishing my coffee, I spent 15 minutes with my empty coffee cup at the edge of the table, hoping that by some miracle, I'd be getting a refill. During this time, we watched another couple come and go without service, and everyone else looking around as desperate as I felt for lack of service. We looked abandoned - not a waitress, not a busboy, no one in sight. Finally, our order arrived. After waiting over an hour, I was hoping for a little more than what looked to be off the children's menu. The final bill was on the more expensive side of Brattleboro breakfast dining, although I would have been happy (as opposed to mentioning it here) to pay it had the service and the portions been reasonable. Overall, I got the feeling of incompetence and another restaurant boosting prices to keep from going under. The Pros: When I was able to get my desperately needed coffee, it was great. My meal was quite tasty as well, although I was left wanting for lack of portions. The staff was friendly if unprofessional. The location is great - a little crunchy/chic. The long and the short: If you have the patience of a saint, and aren't actually hungry or thirsty, and a petite appetite, go for it, but I'll be sticking to the Chelsea Royal.
