Not sure about the other reviews here, but we had a bad pizza night. We are from out of town and even with an adjustment for rural pizza it still gets an awful from 5 hungry people.
THe delivery was late, the dough is really chewy and too much stuff on top to enjoy. Worst of all are the prices 20 dollars per "bad" pizza.
Look elsewhere.
I go to VT once a year for a four day weekend while there I have pizza every day I have a pie from A Crest Above and I know what great pizza is I come New York where pizza was born and to say that I have eaten the best is most definitly true. But if I could have a pie from A crest Above everday would be Heaven sent. This is the only pizza that my Mom has eaten and not complained about she is a very picky pizza eater.
A Crust Above is one of Rutland's hidden gems. Chef Carl is truly an artist in the kitchen, creating delicious food that is unlike anywhere else. To call A Crust Above a "pizza place" is like calling your beloved pet a "thing". This is a special place.
Yes, they have (without a doubt) the tastiest and most original pizza in Rutland, perhaps in Vermont, and rivaling anywhere in the country. Believe me, I've eaten plenty of food in plenty of places.
What makes the pizza great is both the crust and the sauce. The crust is nice and soft, but hearty enough to really hold together (this is not "thin crust" pizza). And very very tasty! The sauce is outstanding - very tomatoey, spiced right, but not too agressive. It's not the normal "canned" stuff that too many pizza places use. It tastes refreshing but not overpowering - nice and complementary to the pizza. And yeah, they have white pizza's too, and I'm told they are wonderful as well (I like pizza sauce, my wife really does not - although she will eat this sauce no problem).
But that's only the tip of the iceberg. Their wings are fabulous, and especially dipped in Chef Carl's own "voodoo sauce", which is a spicy sauce that hits you softly at first, but builds as you eat it - making it friendly for those who like mild (just eat some) to the very hot crowd (eat plenty, perhaps dip your pizza in it too).
They also have many regular menu items as well as original and amazing specials. There's too many to name, as Chef Carl is always trying something new. If you have room, grab some dessert - they are decadent and wonderful, too.
My recommendation for lunch is to start with a basket of wings with voodoo sauce, and have a Barnyard pizza. If 5 kinds of meat isn't your thing, I recommend the Rhodes pizza (my second favorite). Or try one of their other 20 or so combinations, or make your own. And yeah, any of their pies or cakes are going to be delicious!
I've had most of their pizzas on the menu, and they were all great (the base of sauce and crust is a winner, no matter the toppings). I've also been there for their Mexican fiesta, and you won't find better Mexican food anywhere in the northeast. The guacamole was expecially awesome, and I'm not a big guac fan. Chef Carl's is the best I've ever had.
I have eaten there about 100 times. Because seriously, if I'm going to eat out, I might as well eat where the food is excellent. That's right here! I have brought friends there from all over the US and a couple from overseas. They all talk about it, they all say that when they come back to the Rutland Vermont area, they have to eat at A Crust Above. And they do. Which says alot, because we're blessed with a lot of good restaurants, since we are a tourist town. And the folks that come in to visit are people who usually travel all over, and have the opportunity to eat at all kinds of great places. And they eat here.
If you've read this review and you're not convinced, I have no idea what else to tell you. I'd have to drag you down there to try it. Then you will believe it. I'm telling you, I'll be completely suprised if you don't consider A Crust Above the best (or one of the best, because many of us have a "sentimental favorite") "pizza place", or perhaps one of the best restaurants you've ever had a meal at. If you're in the area, check it out. You won't be disappointed.
By the way, they are kid friendly, very accomodating, affordable, they have very personable waitstaff, and a pleasantly casual atmosphere. Couple all of that with excellent food, and I'm not sure why you're not eating there tonight. I hope you are. I might see you there.

I told Diners, Drive-ins, and Dives about this place. I'm from New Jersey, and although I've only been there once, I fell in love with it. Hopefully, you'll see it on the food network soon enough! :)
