A dream of a place: We stumbled upon this restaurant on the first day of a recent trip to New England. We could hear the rush of the river before we saw the mill. With the late afternoon sun shining on the riffles and falls of the river, and the geese swimming there, the old mill took on a surreal beauty. For a while, I could only stand and stare. The restaurant, with many large well-placed windows, takes full advantage of the setting. The food was excellent, as was the service, which was friendly but not intrusive. The owner was there, helping out and making sure everything was right. To make the experience even more serendipitous, two fat groundhogs came out and started eating greenery right before our eyes. The owner let us get a closer view with his field glasses. It's a long way from Arkansas, but if I ever get back to Connecticut, I'll certainly try to go back to The Grist Mill. It is a special memory. My only regret is that I didn't have my camera to record it. Judy
As extraordinary as I remembered!: A quick note to let all know that The Grist Mill in Farmington is worth the trip. I hadn't been in a couple of years, due to a move, however jumped at the chance when we visited friends. From the warm welcome we recieved at the door, to the owner-led tour of the newly renovated tavern, the service was top notch. My guest had special dietary needs which were met without question.
The food is a blend of traditional american with a contemperary flair. The Yellowfin Tuna was seared to perfection and presented beautifully. I could go on, but I'm running out of room. Do yourself a favor and check it out, it's not just for special occasions!
