My husband and I are vegetarian. Cavey's doesn't have vegetarian entrees on the menu, but I've had some of my best meals ever at gourmet restaurants that had no vegetarian items on the menu but had excellent and imaginative chefs. When I called Cavey's to make the reservation, I asked about vegetarian dishes and was told that the chef would prepare vegetarian dishes. Given Cavey's reputation, I had high hopes, but the evening turned out to be disappointing. It started off well. The bread was delicious and plentiful. We were able to order an appetizer -- a flatbread with cheese and figs and meat -- without the meat, and that was delicious and plentiful. The salad was just okay -- overdressed. The entrees turned out to be very ordinary. We had a risotto with vegetables and spaghetti with vegetables. The sauce for both of them was just okay, and seemed to be the same sauce on both dishes. This was our 5th wedding anniversary and we were hoping for something special, but it wasn't.
This is my favorite restaurant anywhere. My wife and I first went to Cavey's French restaurant in ~1991. It was fabulous then and is just as good now. We continually return to this restaurant for the following reasons: 1) the waitstaff is mature and dedicated to excellant service. Andre - the wine steward and host has been there for as long as i can remember and he truely leads by example in his dedication to a top shelf service. this all creates an atmoshphere of refined, relaxed quiet comfort - where you can actually hear the dinner conversation without shouting above the noise. This contrasts sharply with upscale expensive well-known restaurants that have a feel of too much bustle and good but haughty wait staff that posture like runway models. Caveys French is genuine. And the best part is the food - I am repeatedly bowled over at how wonderful the food is and how the flavors are so will blended and nuanced for just a great experience. Thank you for all of your efforts Caveys.
I was taken here for my birthday and boy was it fabulous! I did not find it pretentious at all! While the service was quite formal, it was not stuffy as the waiter had a wonderful sense of humor and made us feel ultra-comfortable. Same for Andre, the host and wine expert. Every bit of food was fabulous and perfectly presented and prepared. The lamb melted in my mouth and the goat cheese ravioli was to die for. Save room for the souffle for dessert - wonderful. The portions were perfect - we were very satisfied. This is a special place that will cost you but it is well worth it for a special occasion.
