Durring our stay in Baranford we stopped at the
USS Chowder Pot and found it to be a poor excuse for a seafood restaurant. The crab cakes are bland and pasty [probably frozen] and the clam chowder was also bland and not quite a cut above canned chowder. I found only a couple of pieces of rubbery clams in the whole bowl.
The service was even worse than the food. When our server realized we only wanted crab cakes and chowder his attitude changed from cheerful to disapointed and he ignored our simple request to bring the food all together. We got the crab cake and had to wait for the clam chowder. When asked if we wantetd more coffee we said yes and never saw him again until we had to track him down to get the check.
My wife has worked as a server for many years and we know how hard they work for low pay and always tip well but for the first time in our lives we were so disapointed we left no tip at all.
I had a great time there. The service was exceptional and the food was very good.
Make sure you're hungry, though!!! I intentionally avoided the crab cakes, because some places they just give you a small cake. However, my wife got them, and they were huge! I later tasted her leftovers (we both got a few meals off our take home bags) and, even cold, they were very good.
I had the whole belly clams, and they were cooked perfectly.
I definitely recommend!
11/08-I ordered swordfish. There were 2 huge pieces filling a platter, each just under 1" thick. They were done perfectly, moist and delicious. I could only eat one of the pieces and take the other home. I highly recommend it.
