Dinner in the main dining room on a Saturday evening
in July was more about hype and less about detail and truly fine dining. Lemon was requested for the water which was brought to the table immediately, however, it was presented on a paper coctail napkin
with no utensil rather than on a small plate with a fork. The server arrived at our table to inform us
that she had some bad news....there was only one serving of lobster remaining so if it was desired we would have to inform her right away. The menu was
extremely limited in selection and the portions small. The corn soup was more of a tasting rather than an $11.00 appetizer....$33.00 for three tastings!! The flavor was wonderful except it was just a few spoonfuls in an oversized plate more appropriate for a serving of pasta. The tomato salad
($11.00)was flat in taste. The veal entrees mundane
served over a mixture of vegetables. Scallops on the appetizer section of the menu were requested as
a main entree which the chef accommodated with ease. At dessert time the server once again informed us that the strawberry shortcake was being substituted with rasperries or blueberries as the kitchen had run out of strawberries. The four diners selected a rhubarb cobbler which was wonderful in taste, however, so oversized that it became unappetizing. It was in such contrast to the miniscule entree servings. One would think we were at one restaurant for appetizer and entree and at another for dessert The wines ordered by the glass were exceptionally
good and fairly priced. As my party was being seated
I discreetly informed the hostess that I prefer to settle the bill away from the table and requestd she inform the server of my request. At the end of the evening, the bill was presented to me at the table. Once again...absolutely no attention to detail. The staff was friendly and accommodating, however, lacking the finesse of fine dining service. The Copper Beech owes them training.
Although the evening was not the special evening my
wife and I had planned in entertaining friends to celebrate an important occasion, I tipped the server
more than the usual 20%. Hardworking ...they deserve to be rewarded for their efforts.
