This was my first foray into Indian cuisine. Judging from the other Yahoo! reviews Kolam has earned, I chose well.
Holy cow was this place good!
Service was warm and friendly. I got the feeling these people genuinely wanted me to be happy. Sounds simple but it's a rare attitude to find in Fairfield county.
The atmosphere is slightly decayed. I think it has to do with the building. Koram is in an older building that has probably seen many uses over the years. The actual decorations are tastefully done with ethnic pride. I love the music. It varied from traditional Indian music to Indian pop music to ambient.
We were greeted with something like an amuse bouche. It was a lentil bread with two sauces: one tamarind and one mint. I wasn't thrilled with this starter and began to worry about what was to come. I'm happy to report things took a turn for the better after we ordered.
I started with Kolam Moti Saag. This spinach dish had a rich mouth feel without the heaviness of something creamy. My wife had the Galouti Kebab which was flavorful and addictive. The plain nan was tender and warm. I had Aatu Kari for my main (lamb). My wife had Chicken Tikka Masala. The dishes were served family style. The aromatic rice wafted a wonderful warm cinnamon scent across the table. We had a blast mixing and matching flavors between our dishes. All of it was excellent.
I strongly recommend Kolam for those unfamiliar with Indian cuisine. Don't let the lentil bread starter throw you off. The staff will help you with any questions. As far as I can tell, there are no bad choices on the menu. Superb value.

Kolam has the best service in an Indian restaurant to me because I know the manager. Sentil, he's so funny and friendly. I hear the food is exceptional as well.
By far the best Indian restaurant in (Newtown) CT that caters to both south and north Indian cuisine. Excellent entrees, very well presented / plated, Courteous staff and a well stocked bar. For those who want to get the authentic" taste of Indian cuisine, this restaurant is a must go. The Chicken tikka masala is simply to die for!! Hand ground spices are used in seasoning all the vegetarian, seafood and lamb dishes and the taste is truly heaven on earth. For those calorie conscious out there, low fat options available too. Extremely vegetarian friendly. Do not miss KOLAM!
The Best Around: My family and I frequent this restaurant and find it to be consistently the best Indian food in the area. Service is excellent â from the first time eating there we were treated as if we were long time patrons. My wife and I were spoiled by the curries in the UK and were sad to see how many Indian restaurants could not meet the standards we were accustomed. Moving to Newtown just over two years ago we were so pleasantly surprised when we came to Kolam. We feel comfortable taking our kids as well.
