I had to rewrite this review as I was dragged here for a birthday party recently. I had high expectations for this restaurant as nearby restaurants are very good (Wild Ginger, Tengda and, surprisingly, Friend House). Unfortunately, the sushi is mediocre at best as it is poorly prepared. The Spicy Tuna roll is not spicy, has very little flavor, and left a lot to be desired. It also had a somewhat chemically taste to it. Pieces of sushi were average at best. Yes they were fresh, but they were served too warm. We also ordered the Nabe Yaki Udon and Chicken Teriyaki. The Chicken was very good as were the vegetables that accompanied it. The Nabe Yaki Udon chicken was dry, the fish was awful, the cabbage was overcooked, the vegetables were undercooked, but the shrimp tempura, broth, and noodles were great. There were a lot of fruit flies on the "paper" windows which was a turnoff. In addition, there were some flies feasting on a dead bug which was just friggen awful to see after your food was ordered and you couldn't really leave. The service was fantastic and the people were friendly. Overall, the food was below average. Any option is better than East. In the end, food is what counts and it fell flat. The disgusting bug problem which I have now experienced there twice is just absurd. They have to have other bugs in that restaurant that I don't want to think about because it takes anywhere's between 7-50 days for fruit flies to hatch. They have to have some nasty old rotting food lying around for quite some time. I can't for the life of me figure out why anyone would come here for any reason other than collecting bug specimens. It's just a terrible place. I don't care if I am invited by the President, I am not going back ever again!!!! EVER!!!
P.S. A prior review suggested the sushi is fresh daily, but it is actually delivered twice a week (I forget which days I was told) which is common with most sushi restaurants. On my most recent trip I had a tuna roll which had been treated with chemicals to help them keep. I doubt they throw much away. They serve it regardless.
I'd rate this restaurant with 10 stars if possible. Just the FINEST Japanese food in CT -- and highly competitive with anything we've eaten in NYC too. Truly wonderful food. Try the Napoleon or the Oh My God! roll...and see what I mean.
East was so-so. I just wasn't overly impressed with the food. Sushi wasn't bad, just wasn't what I had expected. Go to friend house if you want some excellent traditional sushi and phenomenal fusion special rolls. Service was good at east, if only the food matched it. It was also quite a bit more expensive than other places such as friend house that are better.
