I went to the Union League Cafe on Sept. 19, 2009 on my 35 years of marriage. My wife and I decided to go downtown to eat since we grew up and met in New Haven. We still live in the area and still shop and eat downtown.
I decided since we never ate at the Union League we should try it. I found parking right in front so I thought the evening was going to be good. The hostess was nice and since we had reservation's we did not have to wait.
Now this is where things went downhill. We ordered drinks were good. The waiter seemed like he was not into his job. He explained the menu to us and my wife ordered a salad and salmon and I ordered the veal.
Well, the waiter came with the meals and he totally forgot my wife's salad before the meal. He wanted to know if she wanted the salad during the meal. She declined very nicely but was disappointed because she wanted to try that special salad before the main course that the waiter talked about for two minutes.
When the food came I got lamb not the veal that I wanted and ordered!! We ordered another drink because at this point if it was not for my anniversary I would have called the owner over or walked out. Instead I ate the lamb which I did not like. I kept my mouth shut. I was trying to make a bad situation into something positive. My wife did liked her meal.
My wife wanted desert and to make matters worst the waiter said I look like Groucho Marx(which I do not at all)!! Now I was getting real mad, no salad, lamb not the veal and now for no reason being called someone I do not resembled by the waiter.
We got the desert and coffee which was good and what we ordered. I paid the check and even gave him a 22% tip which the waiter did not deserve.
The owner or the management could E-mail me or call me. Which they did not do yet. I called but they did not call me back!! I will let you know when they do respond.
We've been to this restaurant before and had wonderful meanls, so we anticipated an excellent lunch during New Haven's Restaurant Week in April. However, the special menu disappointed us in its sparse selections. The choices included only a small entree and dessert. No soup, salad or appetizers appeared. The bread that arrived was cold. The waiter informed us that we had to order dessert at the same time we chose our entrees because "We're busy." However, the restaurant was decidedly NOT full. While the food was tasty, the impression that we received was that this was definitely the less expensive option. Even presentation was skimpy. Management made a poor choice in not putting their best foot forward for this event. Based on this experience alone, I wonder how many people would return after this type of receoption.
We went to The Union League Café after reading about it in Connecticut Magazine.
It was rated number one in the State overall . Well for us itâs not even the number one French Restuarant in the state!!!
It is also listed as romantic and for that itâs awful. The service was just OK. Since it was prom week I was asked to leave a $50 deposit and when my bill came they had not taken off the $50. Overall itâs two Star poor!!! for French itâs very good but not in the same league as the other French restaurants like Cavey's in Manachester or Ondine in Danbury.
