About:OK, OK, so it is arguable who has the best pizza in New Haven (and maybe the world), but after trying the "sublime" white clam pizza pie, you will have to decide for yourself, or ask former President Clinton, who used to hang out at Sally's as a young Yale law student. The age-old competition between Sally's, Pepe's Pizzeria up the block, and Modern's Apizza has been brutal. So, get in line and see for yourself how "delizioso" Sally's pies can be!

It's been a couple of years since my last review, so recently I brought a large group to Sally's. I made a reservation a few weeks prior to our visit, like anyone else can. Of course, when we arrived and the line was down the block, people were sneering and muttering about us as we were seated promptly...that's the point of making a reservation. Yes, our order took some time, because we ordered large pies and the oven gets crowded quickly. The pies were brought out in sequence, so each was scalding hot and we always had pizza on the table. Rick & Bob did not disappoint our group, everyone was raving about the pizza. If you own a business, you treat your long-term customers preferentially - that's how you acquire long-term customers in the first place. For those who spout conspiracy theories about secret phone numbers, hand gestures, code words, and other methodologies to subvert the line, go back to investigating the Apollo 11 moon landing. Anyone can make a reservation in person if the date and time you want is not already jammed up with other reservations. I realize this is not a viable option for out-of-towners, but that's how they roll. Bring a book!

Easily the most disappointing pizza place I've ever been to. I'm completely dumbfounded that they stay in business, let alone get to be known as 'famous'.
First of all, we got there and we were the first people in line. After a little while a bunch of people were waiting and one of the cooks comes up to us all annoyed and tells the people 'you can't stand here blocking the door. Go outside." It was raining outside and my friend an I were far enough in the restaurant so that we weren't even close to blocking the door, so we stood in the restaurant. 5 minutes later the guy says "I told you you can't block the door", so apparently standing within 10 feet of the door is blocking it.... so we go outside... in the rain.
It took about 45 minutes to sit down, even though we were 2 people and were first in line. We sat down and didn't even get menus to look at for a couple minutes, so we had to ask for them. The waiter wasn't unfriendly, but he was serving the whole restaurant (about 15 tables) so he didn't have time to help any table adequately.
Anyway, I was willing to forgive all of this if the pizza turned out to be good, but from walking through the restaurant I noticed pizzas burnt and drowning in oil. We ordered one of the white pizzas, since they were supposed to be good. Overall it took about 1 hour and 15 minutes before the pizza came.
The pizza itself was fairly disapointing, though I have had worse. Parts of the pizza were crunchy like a potato chip, and some parts were chewy. My jaw was actually in some serious pain by the end of the meal (I got a large with my friend) because it was so incredibly tough, but I was fighting through it because I was starving.
The flavor of the pizza was alright (rosemary was a good touch), especially after adding a little pepper, but overall I would never ever go to this place again.
I had been to Pepe's a couple years ago and remember being fairly disappointed, but it was nothing like this.
Keep in mind, I am a fan of good pizza, no matter what style, and I am not the kind of person who likes chain restaurant pizza. This kind of pizza: 'apizza' is more suited to be an appetizer instead of a main course.

One final thing: after eating the pizza, my hands looked like I had just washed them with charcoal and oil, so I had to go wash them in the dirty bathroom which was basically in the middle of the kitchen.

If you eat at this place, be prepared for a pretty big disappointed. I cannot believe that people have actually said this place is good. I am going to read the other reviews now to get some laughs.

We went there on a Friday night and weirdly the place had many empty tables. We found out why. We waited over an hour and still no pizza. The waiters were rude. Everyone in the restaurant seem to be waiting that long even though it wasn't that crowded. Go to pepe's or Modern!
