The prices lead one to expect a fabuous dining experience, but it is a colossal disappointment. The waitress was condescending explaining obscure terms on the menu and interacting with guests. Her descriptions of the specials were remarkably unhelpful and, well, undescriptive. On a chilly spring evening the staff couldn't manage to shut off a cold-air fan that made the area uncomfortably chilly--despite FOUR direct and polite requests. They charged $9 for an imported bottle of spring water ($9?!) The wine list--along with everything else on the menu-- was so stupidly overpriced that we skipped wine and dessert. The salads cost extra, the main dish portions were on the small side, and a shrimp bisque was inedible, with tons too much salt. Two members of our party really liked their main dishes, four of us were neutral; all of us felt ripped off and will NEVER return.

Let's not chide another person's subjective reaction to a restaurant. Isn't that what reviews are about, anyway? I give an establishment three attempts to please me, and The West Street Grill long ago struck out. It's far too snotty for its so-called appeal; I was unimpressed with the menu and comestibles; I found the staff to be impatient and impersonal. I learned of the establishment through Connecticut Magazine and have been wary ever since to go to any of its recommended venues.

I have been visiting friends in Litchfield for Christmas for several years now. Last Christmas Eve was spent at the West Street Grill where four of us were sat at a table that could not fit more than three people. This year, my hosts decided to return because of the restaurant's proximity to their home, and because they had gone to the restaurant in person over a month ahead of time to make a reservation for any table other than the one we had been sat at. Our reservation, they were told, was the very first one for Christmas Eve this year! That is why we were shocked to learn, as we arrived there two nights ago, that we were to be sat at the very table we had been sat at the year before. When we asked for a different table, and explained that we had made a reservation well in advance in order to avoid being sat at a table that does not fit four people comfortably, we were told that WE were being unreasonable, that they couldn't have possibly promised us a particular table, and that we would have to wait. The wait itself was perhaps the most humorous (and appalling) display of name-dropping I have ever witnessed, by an owner no less. Apparently, the restaurant was "full of celebrities" that night (none were in sight though I later found out a local author was present). "George Clooney was supposed to be [there that] night, but was in the Caribbean instead and had already made a reservation for next Christmas." I had already lost my appetite. Minutes later (at 8:30pm!) we were told that the kitchen was closing and that we would have to order from the bar while we waited for a normal size table to be cleared. Because it was Christmas Eve we all decided to take this ridiculous demand in stride, but again reminded the owners how unfortunate it was that our reservation had not been honored and that instead of being inexplicably angry at US he should understand that the customer is always right. His reaction was shocking. "NO, that's not true," he replied. At this point all of us decided to get our coats and leave. Another (wonderful) restaurant was glad to accommodate us immediately, so our Christmas Eve wasn't totally ruined, but I will never forget what shameless, disgusting treatment my hosts and I had suffered at the West Street Grill. The establishment is categorized as a restaurant, when in fact it's essentially a private eating club. The food at this club, as I recall from last year, is good, but I would never want to be a member. And since it's all too eager to have George Clooney as one, I'm not quite sure why he would want to be one either.
