I gave this salon a try since I live nearby, but was I shoked when it was time to pay the bill. The stylist was okay but lacked personality and from what I understood from the few words she spoke to me was that she had been working at the salon for quiet a while and had years of experience. My cut, partial color and partial highlights were okay but not good enough to merit returning or suggesting it to friends and family. I was charged and this is without drying my hair $160.00 which I though was extravagant and a totally made up amount from this stylist just to make a better tip. I made a comment to her on how expensive I thought it was and she smirked. I paid the amount and gave her a dismal tip. Three months later I tried a "better" salon in Middlebury which a coworker refered and I paid much less and got more. Full color, partial hightlights and blow dried and styled for $120 by a top notch experienced stylist with better technique. Be warned as I see how previous customer reviews have already stated the problems that I encountered.
I tried this establishment for the fact that a friend of mine recommended it. I liked the the cut and highlights that I received and the stylist was very professional and talented.
All in all the salon just needs a few small touches to update such as new paint colour, modern art work and new sinks which looked like they are from the 80's. The stylist did mention that they were putting new flooring in the coming weeks and I did notice on her station a sign stating that there would be a price increase in their services which I thought was tacky especially when she informed me of the renovations. The price for cut and color and minimal styling since she didn't want to completely dry and straighten my hair (she claimed would take too long) was pricey for an average hometown Torrington salon. I felt that I can go to a high end salon and pay the same and have a better experience. I will go again only for the fact that I did like the stylist but the price increase will determine if I'll continue going.
Just a quick note, most Salons or Spas are intimidating for me, not this SalonSpa⦠let me explain. A good day for me usually means I have spent most of it wearing some sort of boot around the farm less than perfectly groomed with my hair tied under a baseball cap. I have two beautiful sisters that have encouraged a bit more primping and it is just not me. I am comfortable with my short neat nails and when I go âcrazyâ, I might use an earthy colored polish. Donât get me wrong I love to pamper myself, just not every day. Does this sound like you? If you havenât read or heard by now, Hair by Design is a beautiful relaxing SalonSpa not intimidating at all, not even for me. Everyone that I have met at Hair by Design is very friendly and professional and when I do pamper myself, it is at this SalonSpa. I just canât say enough about this wonderful place.
My favorite: side-by-side lavender pedicure with a friend and a beverage

I agree I've tried this salon twice and the last time I went I was charged $20 more for the same services and further more (the sencond time) I asked them not to dry my hair to keep the cost down and I was charged more? I found this a bit shaddy and greedy. I hate the feeling of being ripped off. You are right I'm sure that a top salon in a better area would be the best option at least there would be a better atmosphere plus getting the salon experience. Great Warning to potential customers!! Thank you for posting your review!!
