I have been to LaFortuna off and on for several years. Have never been really impressed with the place, in fact, I have been disappointed several times. Last night I attended a retirement dinner --- it was $38.00 per person (dinner only - not including drinks). We were served an appetizer which was just one very small piece of bruchetta per person. Next came a very plain small salad. Dinner was served Buffet style â Waitstaff served the food on our plates. They gave us very stingy amounts ⦠a small scoop of pasta, and small amounts of veal, chicken, and a small portion of stuffed salmon that was no bigger than a small stuffed clam. When some of the men went up to get seconds, there was none. Our drink order was taken when we first arrived, but no one came back to take refill orders until it was almost time for desert, an hour and a half later. And, desert ⦠what can I say? There were three tiny little pieces each of something chocolate, cheesecake(?) and stale gingerbread â¦. Those three pieces did not even equal 1/8 of a piece of pie. No one was asked if they wanted a second cup of coffee. One thing that I can complement the restaurant on was that they kept filling up the water glasses frequently ⦠probably so that none of us would go home feeling hungry. Also, there were complaints from one table that their waiter was rude, even going so far as to tell someone that they used the wrong plate for something. Believe me â¦. I wonât be recommending this place to anyone, or going there again myself.
Stay away!!!! this place is like the titanic after it hit the iceberg. we've been coming to this joint on and off for five years. in the beginning it was somewhat entertaining -- not because of the ambiance, but rather because of the fun company we had. that said, the ambiance is horrific, a deadly dull old fashioned huge dining room that resembles what one would find in a hotel in the 1940s in times square. it's quite apparent the place has lost most of its customer base. we were there recently and the joint was virtually empty -- and this was on a sat night. there's very few staff on duty, service is terrible, food has gone WAY down hill. It's apparent that the place has been hit by the recession. beyond that though, everything on the menu is way over-priced and the portions smaller and less tasty, and those prices have gone up certainly because of the loss of customers and revenue. food is cold and has to be sent back, waiters are virtually non-existent and surly. the owner and chief chef acts likes he's on "something" and has an arrogant attitude. man the lifeboats! do yourself a favor and go elsewhere.
I have been going to La Fortuna regularly for the past 6 months. It has become one of my favorite, if not the best, restaurants I frequent in fairfield county. They have a great staff of waiters and bartenders, all who now treat me like family. The food is consistently great, whether it is a standard menu item or a special.
Also, they often have live entertainment in the dining room, which is soft, mellow and adds to the ambience.
The owner, who is also a "hands on" renowned executive chef, even takes the time to come out (on occasion when it's not too busy) and greet some of the guests.
I have not held a large party there, yet have been in the dining room several times while a party (wedding rehearsal/dinner/reception, b'day, anniversary, etc.) was taking place in one of the other areas of the restaurant. Several times, I ran into the party guests later in the lounge and they could not say enough about how great a time they were having and how it was a truly special evening.
Overall, it is a warm, friendly place and perfect for a casual family meal (they have the greatest pizza) or an elegant special occasion.
