Very inexpensive membership rates. This is a basic gym with lots of treadmills, ellipticals, a few stair steppers, and exercise bikes. It has plenty of free weights and weight machines.
They call it a "no judgment zone" and frown upon muscle heads grunting really loud or dropping their weights. They even sound a siren when a muscle head gets too loud and inconsiderate. It is also nice that you don't have to worry about losing 40 pounds before you can even go into the gym and work out. There are people of all different sizes and shapes there.
The gym is usually clean, and they have plenty of paper towels and cleaning solution around for members to wipe down their machines. The locker rooms are pretty basic, plenty of lockers, showers, and two restrooms (in the ladies' room). They also have tanning booths which you can use for free as part of the higher priced "black card" membership. I've never used the tanning booths, so I can't comment on those. There are plenty of members who seem like they are a tan or two away from melanoma, so I assume they must work fine.
The staff is usually pretty friendly. The front desk seems to turnover a lot, but most of the time, they always make sure to welcome you when you come in and say bye when you leave.
Here are a couple of things you won't find at the Norwalk Planet Fitness:
towels (you need to bring your own)
exercise classes
individual TVâs on the cardio machines (although, they all have headphone jacks which you can plug your own headset into and tune into one of the several TV's hanging from the ceiling)
The hours are great, there is no excuse why you can't find a half an hour or hour to work out. They open at 4 a.m. (and believe me, there are people who are there at 4 am, when I used to show up at 5:30 a.m., I would find some people leaving drenched in sweat! They close at midnight.
Peak hours seem to be 7 a.m. to 9 a.m. and 4:00 to 8:00ish. I have been there plenty of times during peak times, and while it can be hard to get your "favorite" machine, there is usually a machine open. I've NEVER had to wait for a treadmill. There are plenty of those.
All in all, since my membership cost me $99 down and $10/month with the rate guaranteed for 5 years, this is the best gym I've ever joined. (I joined the gym in 2005, so I am not sure what the rates are as of 2008, but I hear they are still pretty inexpensive.)
It's really a nice gym, and I am very happy with my experience there.
grrrrrrr-ate: nice people, clean
