As a former resident of the "Pasta Triangle" of New Jersey where pizza is king, and an ex-neighbor of Uncle Junior (Dom Chianese)of Sopranos fame, I know a little bit about pizza. This is the absolute worst pizza I have ever eaten in my life! Thick, gummy, undercooked crust, ketchup-like sauce, and low quality cheese makes Village Pizza a definite "pass". And yet as bad as it was, it was not cheap! To avoid having a cold pizza delivered, I ordered the pie in the shop and drove it home.
This was the first pizza which I actually threw away because it was so bad. It sat in my stomach like a tube of uncooked Pillsbury crescent roll dough. My dog gave me a dirty look when I tried to pawn off the uneaten slices on him and pass it off as a treat.
I can't account for the good reviews here, except to say that there are no really good pizza places in the Ridgefield area, so perhaps those reviewers haven't a really good yardstick.
A good slice of pizza has a crisp crust which snaps when you fold it, dough which is fully cooked all the way through, tangy cheese which doesn't all run off into a ball when you lift the slice and turns somewhat orangeish-yellow when baked, a zesty tomato sauce, and a slightly charred, smoky-tasting crust under the toppings. The underlying crust should not be too dry or very oily; the crust on the rim should be dark and thin almost like a breadstick and not too puffy. Village Pizza's slice is nothing like that.
For real pizza, try Frank Pepe's in New Haven or Fairfield; Star Tavern in Orange, NJ, or Big Apple or Pompeii in Bayonne, NJ; John's or Lazarra's in NYC. Once you've eaten one of those pizzas, you'll never again subject yourself to the gastrointestinal torture of Village Piza. I just wish that the Ridgefield-Wilton-Redding area had a great pizzeria.
Terrible pizza- run, don't walk, away from this place!
