Today, my husband and I met my cousin and her boyfriend at Harold's in Parsippany. When we arrived, we were not only looking to an experience like the ones we have had in Edison (good food, fun, nice time with family).

The server was very nice and helped us my cousin and boyfriend through the menu. The food was great until we got to dessert. It was her boyfriend's birthday recently and we ordered the chocolate mousse cake. 3 of us had sliced into it and had a bite/few bites. Something was not right. It just didn't taste good. At closer look, we discovered there was mold in the cake.

We alerted our server who was wonderful. She apologized and asked if we wanted something else. We were a bit grossed out, so we passed on the chance that a different cake might have the same problem.

When she told Spiro (the owner) who was sitting just having a bottle of water in the empty restaurant, he just told her to apologize on his behalf and ask if we wanted anything else.

We were very disappointed that he did not come over to the table himself (he was obviously not busy) to apologize. If I was a restaurant owner, no mater how busy the place was I would have at the very least come over to offer my apologies. We had been talking about going back there for future comedy nights or dinner theater & even asked him about that earlier in our visit.

All he had to do was get off his rear personally and make an effort. When my husband and cousin's boyfriend approached him, he immediately got defensive, claimed the mold was only in one layer, and it escalated from there. We never had any intention of not paying our bill (we aren't like that... I think as an owner, if you give people moldy food, it is a gesture of good faith to take care of the check, but if he didn't do that and just said "sorry", things would have been better). Of course, he took it that way instead of just admitting he was lazy about how we were treated and accused us of just wanting a free ride.

Eventually, things escalated, he made threats, called the police, smashed 2 plates on the floor extremely aggresively, (pieces cut my cousin's leg) and lunged at my cousins' boyfriend.

I guess it is no surprise it was pretty empty in there today. Even the police said it wasn't the first time they'd been called out there (although this is the first time the one officer said he was there for a customer issue... he must be wonderful to work for --- eeek!). Not sure if my cousin will press charges or not. The officer said it would be either a harrassment or simple assault complaint and we'll know in a few days. Who wants to go to a restaraunt with moldy food and get assaulted when you complain about it???

What a shame... if the guy just said "sorry", we probably would have gone back for comedy nights, etc. and brought friends. Good news travels fast... bad news even faster.
