Worst paella I've ever had. The sangria was so-so. Oh, and even though I mentioned that it was my husband's bday, they failed to bring out cake with a candle in it (even though there were birthdays celebrated all around us!!). The calamari was very good.
I've eaten at the Tavern at least 50 times in the 20+ years that its been open in the Mountainside location.
Just about everything on the menu is recommendable, although my favorites are: jumbo shrimp in lemon sauce, breaded veal cutlet, langostinos, shrimp in garlic sauce, griddled shrimp (no longer on the menu), rack of lamb (crazy good!), and the salmon (I've never been to a restaurant that serves a larger or more moist salmon steak!)
Free soup of the day and great rolls are an added bonus! but I tend to skip the fillers and just chow down on the real food:) The service is also very good.
I was a bit surprised to read a few less than stellar reviews, but I guess that like everything in life - your mileage may vary when it comes to restaurants. Staff in any organization have off nights, but I can assure you that out of the multitude of times I've been to this restaurant these guys are on target more than any other place I've been.
Spanish Tavern: You begin with a great soup, we had a garlic soup that was tremendous! While the acoustics are not the best, we really enjoyed the food. It was tasty, plentiful, and reasonably priced. Add the Sangria, and it's a great time.
