Sure it's not "it's greek to me" from across of street but this is not gourmet either. The presentation of the food is nice; restaurant has that 'hole in a wall' charm so appreciated by New Yorkers. But the food has a big room for improvement. It was four of us and each ordered deferent items so we can try more and all food we got did not have much flavor to it... with exception to Crème Brule and Strudel. Even nicer items like escargots where just ok, souses where not delicious as we came to expect from a nice French restaurant we actually believe that three main courses had same souse.
Special word on Prix Fixe ($43). The menu comes with choice of four appetizers: Escargot - 3 snails with mushroom and sauce; Crabmeat Strudel - so fishy no one at our table wanted to eat it; Herb and Spinach Crêpe - not bad one crepe; Wild Mushroom Dumplings - let me tell you i would not even be able to recognize them. You get choice of two soups: Lobster Bisque taste almost as good a nice canned variety and an OK French onion. One salad of three, non are even near the delicious unexpected salads we have eaten in past couple years .
For entrees are choice of salmon, veal escalope - one slice of nicely prepared veal, Beef Financiér - wasn't much in medium rare version, marinated Chicken and pork tenderloin, both a not bad with lots of sauce. Unpleasant surprise that all main entrees come with same boring side dish: scoop of mashed potato, 2 string beans, 2 carrot strings, one half of baked tomato, slice of steamed relative of zucchini.
We all agreed that the food does not taste French. Presentation is nice, so are deserts. Especially we liked: Crème Brûlée and Warm Bavarian Apple Strudel. That probably only two items we would order again in Latour⦠beside of three bottles of fine wine we bough across the train tracks.
