El Coyote is a strange experience, but riddled with inconsistencies. I have been there when I thoroughly enjoyed the food, and other times when it was average at best. I have seen it clean, and seen it dirty. I have had great service and poor service. It remains, however, the closest place to get Mexican food to my home.
I went to El Coyote for the first time last night, and did not have a good experience. The place was just dirty. The table wasn't wiped down, the chairs were sticky and the menus were covered in food. It was gross. The only thing that was okay was the food, but even that was not the greatest. I would not recommend this place.
We have been going to El Coyote for 14 years. It is one of our favorite eateries in NJ and just 20 minutes from home. The food is great, not too spicey. The wait staff A team has been there as long as we have been customers. They are cordial, attentive and hard working. The chips are warm, the salsa tasty, the sangria delicious and the ultimate margaritas cool and strong. Cinco de Mayo can be a madhouse but lots of fun. Thankfully they survived an ownership change without losing their soul. Give it a try!

I used to go there when I lived in NJ. The food was mostly excellent. The owner was an excellent dessert chef. I read with interest that there has been an ownership change. When I was frequenting it, it was owned by the people who owned the original one in NYC. Was he the same person who you refer to in the ownership change?
