| About: | In 1740 Ebenezer Byram renovated this old farmhouse into a prominent guesthouse. In the over 250 years that have followed, the Black Horse has catered to the discriminating tastes of its guests. Much of this history is still alive as you can see for yourself as you enter any of the three magnificent buildings that make up this unique dining landmark. When you have a craving for truly the finest U.S.D.A. Prime ribs, dry aged sirloin steaks, fresh jumbo lump crabmeat, fresh tuna or lobsters that taste like they were just plucked from the sea, come to the Black Horse Tavern. If your taste buds are in need of a thin crust designer pizza, charboiled burgers, steamed clams, baby back ribs or oysters, clams, and shrimp from the raw bar, set your sights on the Black Horse Pub. And, last but not least, MacKenzie's is our Scottish Steak and Seafood house located nearby in the Mendham Village Shopping Center. It features prime steak and fresh seafood in a intimate pub atmosphere. |

Living in the area I've frequented this place many times over the years. Every time we go it seems to get more and more crowded. I tend to go on off nights now to avoid the crowd. On Friday and Saturday night the wait is long and there is no waiting area and good luck finding a place to stand (much less sit) around the smallish bar. Expect to wait 20 minutes before the bartender looks at you (at least if you are a guy!). The worst is waiting 45 minutes for a real table and they sit you at a table around the noisy bar section.
On the up side the food is usually very good. You have to know what to order at a place like this because there is such a wide variety. Seafood and steak are good bets. Look out for the specials. If the specials are weak the normal menu is pretty boring. The service is typically excellent.
Since living in Mendham, The Pub has been a good place to go for a family meal. Those family meals that you don't want to spend a lot of time on. The pros about the Pub are that they park your car for you and the people are friendly, but it tends to get crowded.
Not very good at all considering the huge hype all around it. I've been there numerous times and during each instance i was not pleased. The food is generic and the menu isn't very creative at all. The actual quality of the food is very average and the prices don't support it.

I am going to the Pub tonight with some people that have been there once before and liked it. After reading these reviews, I am anxious to see how everything is. Will let you know the outcome.
Well we went there for dinner and we should have listened to the reviews and made a different choice. Out of the 7 of us, only 2 were pleased with their dinners. The chicken pot pie and the swordfish were the winners that night. The steak was so tough, the fish was so bland, just had no taste at all. It was so crowded, we were lucky to go early and be seated quickly, but people were all over the place waiting to be seated that you couldn't even walk through to get to the bathroom or the door to exit the pub. Will never go back again.
