Historical Cemetery: I have lived behind the cemetery for almost 23 years now.Over time i have seem many a funerals and walked amongst the gravesites daily. The land is well keep and as of 1999 the once gravel path ways have been paved over to a new smooth asphalt.Historically it's one of the oldest cemeteries around. The front gate house which is visible on the intersection of church road and kings highway was built in 1858.It is the only remaining building in the once flourishing town of colestown, founded by samule coles in the late 1600's.A church once stood inside it's boundaries but was burned down in 1899,george washington was a quest at the church.
In the early days native americans were buried there, part of their burial rites included being buried sitting up so when the ride to the spirit world came they would be visible to be picked up.Until 1900-1920 the bumps in the ground could still be visible,as they were buried mainly above ground(think of a large pile of a dirt mound).Since then the land has shifted with time and erosion and they are no longer visible.
The many ancient tombstones, many with writting still visibe, stand proud amongst the plethora of tress that inhabit the land.Pathways wind and turn throughout the property like country roads. As it is unfortunate there are lots of new graves, flowers, memorials, and wreathes added season after season, such is the nature of humans to die.A process that begins at birth and ends in places such as colestown.
The Upkeep of the grounds is very good, the grass is cut about every 2 weeks, daunting as a task that it is.Moving amongst the thousands of graves is not and east task, yet it's performed rountinely,as is weedwacking to remove the grass the mowers are unable to reach. On serveral of the corners there are big blue trash bins for relatives to depoist old flowers or wreaths when they fashion the graves with the new ones.
Many come to vist the deceased, some very regularly,as it's nice to see the loved ones are not forgotten.Of course as one might expect the gravesites of those who passed on in the 1800-1900's are not adorned by any wreathes or flowers.
I have picked and re-picked over the years where exactly i'd like to be buried.Countless thousands of strolls, runs, and bike rides through the landscape later i am still not exactly sure where i'd like to be interned. One thing is for certain is that i can think of no other cemetery in which i'd like to spend eternity in.Abby Glen in North Jersey is a wonderful place, yet it's only for pets!!
I hope this review has not deterred you from choosing this location,as i only tried to paint a mental image. One's best bet would be to vist the place, park your car and stroll through the vast expansure and decide for yourself if this is a place to consider,I wish you luck, take care and be well........sonho dourado
