| About: | The Creole Cafe is a residential dwelling converted to a restaurant. The menu has a large and varied selection which includes seafood, chicken, duck, pasta, and more exotic items like alligator sausage, blackened buffalo steak, mesquite grilled elk chop and lemon pepper ostrich. The game is anything but gamey - both the buffalo and ostrich were done to perfection on a recent visit, tender, succulent and delicious. The creole sauce tasted authentic to me and the shrimp were also cooked just right. Save room for the goatcheese cake, a creamy, tangy house specialty that sells out - reserve your piece with your entree!" |

this is not Cajun/Creole - very disappointing: I grew up eating Cajun food from Louisiana and this was not anything close or even a good interpretation. Gumbo is the most common Cajun food and the Creole Cafe's version is shameful. First of all, it should be a soup not a chili. The roux was way too thick and overpowered the chicken and sausage, you couldn't taste anything but brown sauce. It is typically served over white rice to make it thick. Some even eat it with potato salad.
I was there on a Thursday evening and we were the only customers in the cafe, the rest of the dinner would have been fine if it didn't taste like it was made earlier that day then was reheated in a micorwave. I had the ribs and it came with a terrible version of I think was dirty rice, it was not close, next time just buy the Zatarans in the grocery store and boil it for 10 minutes to get a better taste. The ribs were good and plentiful. The only reason I gave it 2 stars was for the desert. The apple crisp was the only thing I would ever eat from there again, it was delicious. My fiance had a lobster dish which was "ok". I doubt I will give this place a second chance, maybe a busier day will mean better tasting food, if not authentic.
Southern Cookin: This place is soo cute and extremely romantic. It is a home that was transformed into a restuarant. I always wanted to try southern cookin, but I mean real southern cooking. So I went with my man at the time who loves southern cooking. I thought the food was absolutely unique and devine. He said that it was as close as it was gonna get to southern cooking without going south. The spices are perfect. The dishes are interesting and delicious. It was so very romantic and I remember us leaving floating on air and star gazing into each other's eyes. Another definite small gem with great southern cooking and feel.
Great little known specialty restaraunt!: One of the best New Orleans style establishment outside of the bayou. The service is great, the food is outstanding, the atmosphere is very nice and the prices are in everyone,s range. Everyone travelling or living in southern New Jersey should make time to visit.

I have friends in Louisiana who have cooked for me and I'm glad I read this review before I drove 40 miles up there.
