One of the best cheesesteaks I've ever had the pleasure of eating. I can see myself making time at least 2 or 3 times a month to stop in. Better than any steak I've had in Philly by far, and the prices aren't too hard on the wallet either. It's a win win so be sure to make a stop there soon. Only downfall is they're only open til 5:00 PM.
Donkey's Rocks!: I grew up 2 blocks from Donkey's Place in Camden in the 50's and remember at the age of about 4 years old handing Mr. Lucas a quarter for a sandwich. My Grandfather took a bus to my house and picked me and we walked around the corner for an afternoon at Donkey's almost every Saturday. My Dad often met us there too for a few beers and a sandwich. Bob Luca and I still argue about the price as he says his Mother is certain that the sandwiches were never a quarter but $.35 cents. I can't argue with her since it's been 55 years since then. ANYWAY, I still go to Camden with a few friends that I took to Donkey's as a teen and we still love the "ONE OF A KIND" cheesesteak with onions as much as ever. I also go to the Marlton store with my 26 yr. old son who now loves Donkey's steaks too. In my opinion the sandwiches are as great now as they were then.4 generations can't be wrong. By the way, for you lucky Marlton/Medford folks, Donkey's delivers!
Worth risking life and limb to get there!: Look, the place is basically a dive and the neighborhood is truly scary but the cheesesteak sandwiches at Donkey's are legendary. If you've got the guts to brave America's most dangerous city - they'll be worth every bite. I live in California and I still dream of the cheesesteak sandwiches I grew up with. Now if only I can get them to ship some to me, my life will be whole again.
