The Tortilla Press is one of those "benchmark" restaurants. As a result, if you don't get there at the right time, you might not get in. Does the live music add to the restaurant? Well, maybe he's not quite my taste. But, the food is!
Friendly staff, great food...BYOB... Who can ask for more? esp with their affordable prices.
I've been going to the Tortilla Press for some time now and have always enjoyed it. My favorites include all of their seafood dishes, especially the scallops, shrimp & salmon entrees. I also recommend the duck if it is being offered as a special, it's quite amazing. They have a number of salads as well, their mango and shrimp salad is just right for lunch.
It is in a great spot in town, at the intersection of Collings and Haddon Avenues in Collingswood. Between Tortilla Press, The Pop Shop & Villa Barone, you can hit three wonderful restaurants in the space of a single block. The atmosphere is pleasant, especially when the weather is nice and the huge windows are open. Wait staff is friendly if not on the youngish side and at different times a local musician plays guitar in the front of the restaurant.
The two biggest complaints I've heard are 1) wait times and 2) the fact that the food isn't "authentic" Mexican. The former is true on Fridays and Saturdays - The line is literally out the door and a wait time of over an hour isn't uncommon. But frankly, that can be said for any number of restaurants in the area. Your best bet is to make a reservation (unfortunately, you can only make them for parties of six or more), not to call ahead.
As far as authenticity goes, this is most definitely not authentic Mexican cuisine, it's Mexican-influenced. This is not a Taco Bell or even a Mexican Food Factory, the food is a bit more nuanced and plays with flavors much more liberally so this may or not fit your expectations. With that said, some of their other traditional Mexican dishes, such as the ceviche & guacamole, are a bit more faithful.
They have recently opened a second location in Pennsauken, near the Cherry Hill Mall. It's a good deal larger than the Collingswood location and has a bar, so I would assume that the wait is less crazy there but I've only been there once on a weeknight so don't hold me to that.
