I hate the fact that i'm writing a bad review about a place I once loved. I live and work in the area and have visited Owen's several times. The food is excellent and you get a lot of value for your buck! In the past I have recommended this awesome pub to my family, friends, and customers. But not anymore. The last time I was there, my boyfriend (who was never there before) and I were treated very harshly by some staff that is in need of replacement. We entered the restaurant part of the pub to get a nice bite to eat. It was only 6pm, we were not intending to drink that evening, and we were born in the 70's...so I found it rather odd that the hostess needed to card us in order to be seated. After looking at our ID's for a couple of minutes were were finally seated. We then waited several minutes before being approached by our waitress, who was giving me the evil eye the minute we were being seated. She rudely asked to see our ID's...eventhough we were not drinking and were already carded at the door. She looked at my boyfriend's ID, then mine. She coldly told me that my in-state ID (with a local address) was not acceptable because it wasn't a driver's license. I had my passport on me, but we were pretty much thrown out of the restaurant before I even had a chance to present it...eventhough I'm WELL over 21, wasn't planning to drink, have been there a lot, and had valid forms of identification. Never in my life have I ever felt so embarrassed and unwelcomed while dining out. To this day, i'll never understand what the problem was. Maybe it was because my boyfriend was an obvious outsider from the typical local crowd...maybe Owen's doesn't take kindly to this and covered it up by taking it out on me and non-driver's license. Or perhaps the waitress was just having a bad night and felt that it was necessary to take it out on a friendly happy couple having a good time. Whatever the reason, I am still hurt and disappointed over how bad we were treated and will continue not to recommend Owen's... at least not to anyone under age 50, non-locals, foreigners/minorities, or people who don't drive. :(
I agree with the people who posted complaints about the attitude of the workers at this place. I came in with a group of friends who are in our 30's, and we were immediately carded at the front and asked for backup id because some of our friends who were married had dups on their PA licenses from name and address changes.
I have 2 dups from address changes, which was really none of the business of the woman in the front, but I was told that it would be a "problem". For who? I'm clearly in my 30's.
I wasn't even there to drink, but just got get something to eat for dinner.
Even more ridiculous was the fact that there were several kids - I'm talking ages 8-12 in the BAR AREA. So, I guess on whatever planet the owners are from, this is ok.
I'll never go back to this place. The food isn't even that good. Specifically, the crab cakes are weak (too much filler), the crab bisque is pureed slop and the side of potatoes that came with the dinner was overly seasoned - not everybody likes a ridiculous amount of pepper in their food. That's why you keep shakers of salt and pepper on the tables.
The people who work there arent friendly from the grouchy bartender to some of the waitresses. We were there the week of aug 1st 2009 and I found the bartender extremely rude. The next day some of my nieces and nephews went there for drinks and to eat.My niece who is 30 and PREGNANT was refused service to eat since she didn't have id. when she asked why kids were in there eating the waitress told her they have guardians. I guess my niece should have brought her 60 year old mom and then she would have been able to EAT.
